Loreto is located 750 miles south of San Diego in Baja California Sur(south) on the magical Sea of Cortez. Loreto is it the oldest town in Baja California was the site of the first California mission. Jesuit Priest Juan Maria Salvatierra founded the mission in 1697 and it is still in use today. Loreto offers visitors unspoiled beaches and the warm waters of Sea of Cortez. Surrounded by the magnificent Sierra de la Giganta mountain range, the spectacular desert, and the Azure Sea of Cortez. Loreto fronts many wonderful islands such as the Coronados with turquoise waters and sea lion colonies; Carmen with its beautiful beaches and coves; Danzantes with its rocky edges and small coves, a paradise for scuba diving; and Catalina, a favorite of the ecologist with its unique flora and fauna. In 1976 oil became Loreto's wealth and the town was developed. Roads, electricity, waste systems, and an airport were built. However, the peaceful relaxing atmosphere remains. The warmest months are June to September with temperatures in the mid to high 90's degrees Fahrenheit. The average low temperature for these months is 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
